Yes it's me, Kate Gaffney in the flesh, or actually, in the text. I am better than ever! In case you were wondering if I had fallen off the face of the earth or something, I assure you, I have not. I have been taking a much needed break from gigging. I have been performing full-time for close to 10 years. I can't even believe it myself! Has it really been that long? During this break, I have been working, playing, and spending priceless quality time with family.
During my hiatus, I also spent a few weeks back in Philly and recorded some of my newer music with my dear friend Andrew Lipke. He has an amazing studio "The Record Lounge" and has been recording and producing some killer projects. So the beginnings of a new release are on their way. I can't wait to do some more work on the album and share it with you all when it's finished. But I'm definitely taking my time on this one, and letting the inspiration and ways of old sink in...what's the rush when we have wonderful lives to create and enjoy each day!? In other studio news, I was in the studio with my Bay Area friend and collaborator, Chris Haugen. He is releasing a new album that will really knock your socks off and I am so honored to sing on it. Stayed tuned for more on that record. Oh how I love the studio!
In gigging news, after almost 10 years, things have come full circle...some of you may remember me from as far back as 2003 in Sacramento. I went by the moniker "Just Kate" and had just found my voice and the inspiration to share my songs and soul with the world. I lived in a warehouse at 13th & R Streets with the boys from the band "Nevada Backwards" - they taught me so much about playing for the love of it, about touring, the ways of the road, and most importantly, how to have a great time! They have since gone their separate ways but they are all joining up for a huge reunion show this Friday in Sacramento at the Blue Lamp. The Blue Lamp is also the first stage I ever performed on way back, when I would ride my bicycle with my guitar on my back to Ben Brenner's Monday night Open Mic.
Oh the memories...and so, I will return as "Just Kate" for this special show to open for my friends and comrades "Nevada Backwards" with a short solo acoustic set. Get there early to catch me, then let's hang out together and listen to the all the great music that's in store for the night! It's gonna be great fun. I know it's been awhile since I've played in Sacramento, so I hope to see some friendly faces in the crowd. I've missed you all.
I will definitely be playing more gigs in the coming months - I'm getting back on stage & playing for the love of it. That is why I started singing and writing in the first place! The music business isn't peaches and cream all the time...and sometimes you have to take a step back to revitalize and quench the soul. So stay tuned for some random gigs that I will be throwing your way, mostly in the Bay Area...but you just never know where I'll turn up next
